Diary of an Insurer: RSA’s Becky Henry

Diary of an Insurer-becky henry

Becky Henry, commercial lines trading and operations director at RSA, likes to be on site as much as possible in order to offer one proposition, one face to market, and one commercial lines team and races to get her daughter to dance class.

School run is a critical start to the week for me and my nine-year-old daughter Bella. Then it’s off to the York Street office in Manchester to kick off the week.

I like to be on site as much as possible to support the teams and help build a strong sense of community across trading, underwriting, operations, claims and support functions.

Mondays are all about focus: delivering against our commercial lines blueprint and ensuring we’re set up to offer one proposition, one face to market, and one team.

I lead our service and productivity workstream, so I’m always thinking about how we improve the broker and customer experience. That means smoothing demand, spotting blockers, and constantly refining how we deliver service.

It’s all about risk on Tuesdays. My team has line one responsibility for governance and controls, so we spend the day making sure our risk registers are up to date and reflect what’s happening across the business.

We work closely with both our specialty lines and commercial lines executive teams to make sure we’ve got the right oversight in place. It’s how we stay effective and consistent in delivering for our brokers.

At 5pm I’m sprinting (sometimes literally) out the door to get Bella to her dance class. She’s in a show soon and the countdown is on.

Midweek is all about checking in on progress. I lead our continuous improvement work, and I love seeing how our new ways of working are landing, and where we still need to tweak.

I have a brilliant team of continuous improvement experts, and we work hand in hand with the business to ensure our operations are as productive as they can be.

I also connect with our data, insight and analytics team to align how we’re integrating RSA and NIG’s tools to get a truly joined-up view of management information across the regions.

Thursday

Thursday tends to be my busiest day. As site leader for Manchester, I bring together all the department heads at our York Street office to review our business continuity plans and upcoming wellbeing and charity activities.

We’re big on giving back. From supporting UK Youth nationally to working with Rise Up and the Greater Manchester Youth Network locally.

I also use Thursdays to check in on engagement across the business and see what we can improve through our People Promise.

Friday

The end of the week is here, but it’s no wind-down. We kick off with our commercial lines executive Pulse to review how we’re tracking against our goals.

Then it’s into new and existing business calls with the regional leadership team, understanding changes in demand and prepping for the weeks ahead.

I always try to carve out a bit of time on Fridays for reflection. With a packed week, a quiet moment to think strategically and focus on my own development really matters.

I finish slightly early on a Friday for the school pick-up, then it’s into the weekend and whatever plans we’ve got lined up with my daughter, partner, and step-kids. It’s always nice to shift focus and enjoy some family time.
